A traumatic event is any situation that causes a person to experience unusually strong emotional reactions that have the potential to interfere with their ability to function normally at work or at home.

Reactions could be emotional distress including shock, disbelief, denial, anger, fear, confusion, self-blame, grief, sorrow and a sense of helplessness. If these problems are not addressed employees might risk developing PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) and/or anxiety disorders, depression.

Individuals could experience physical reactions such as high adrenaline flows, heightened perception, exhaustion. Cognitive changes resulting in short term memory problems, difficulty making decisions, poor attention span could also develop. Furthermore, individuals could withdraw, isolated from social, work and family contact with serious consequences for the individual and the organization.
